UG Level I Comprehnesive Reiew...

By Popular demand we will be offering a mini-workshop to review all the Urban Gypsy signature moves taught during the 16 week Level I rotation!

When? Saturday May 30th from 1pm to 4 pm.

Where? At Urban Gypsy headquarters: Bayou Park Fitness Center (4400 Memorial Drive-Shepherd at Memorial)

Who? Zymirrah and Silvia will be reviewing, correcting form and posture (yes, you will be sore!) and exploring the dynamics of tribal formations during this short-but intense review workshop. You will get the 'big picture'... i.e. see how the UG improv vocab all fits together.

How much? 40$.

This is a REVIEW! Therefore, we require that all students have taken the level I series at "some point" in their lives… which means even if it's been a while.... if you have been missing us, now is your opportunity to jump back in, review and even discover some of the upgrades of the vocabulary!

Ariellah

Gothic Belly Dance Combinations and Choreography (2 hours) - Learn Ariellah's unique style of belly dance! The workshop includes a yoga infused warm up and repetitive drilling of dark fusion belly dance combinations. Students will learn a short choreography that incorporates the combinations learned in the workshop. All levels welcome!

Conditioning, Layering, and Choreography & more! (2.5 hours)- Ariellah will include a yoga infused warm up in preparing your body to do more than just drill. This workshop focuses on strengthening and isolating core muscles in preparation for layering movements, incorporating these layering drills into a choreography learned in the workshop. Bring a yoga mat.

Semi-Private Expressive arms, hands and movement (with an emphasis on arms/hands/chest/belly)(2 hours) - Learn the secrets to Ariellah's expressive arms. Her workshop is devoted to strengthening and beautifying the belly dancers arm, hand, belly and chest work, as well as fluidity of movement. Stretching, strengthening and drilling techniques will be used to build a repertoire of arm, hand and other movements. Arms and hands are key to expressing one's music and love of dance. Students will be encouraged to stylize their own arm movements after drilling the basics. Some exercises are completed in groups to encourage use of arms and personal stylization of arms. Mixed level class, some knowledge of belly dance required.

The next 4 week session begins this week! Yusefina ( http://yusefina.com/Gallery.html ) will be teaching a BRAND NEW Tribal'esque Choreography... It is absolutely suitable for group or solo performance... and rumor has it there is a little veil in this one! Everyone in the class (who is interested in putting it on the stage) will be invited to perform this piece at an upcoming Banjaran Salon at Avant Garden... how fun is that?

NO need to know the UG vocabulary or have any tribal background at all to take this series of classes!!

Just bring your smile and knowledge of belly dance basics with you!

Your Help is Needed!

Hello All,

Some but not all of you may have seen my Blog regarding the major overhaul I’m doing to my Town home. As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, I just found out that my AC Unit is completely shot! I will need a totally new AC Unit for the patio area and cannot get away with just repairing the Compressor. I have been given 2 quotes.
1 is $1,700.00 & the other $1,600.00. YIKES!!!

As a single Mom, doing all the renovations to this place by myself, a new AC unit is totally out of the question. Been having some great weather lately but I’m a native Houstonian and I know my time is running out!

If any one knows ANYBODY in the Houston or surrounding area, that can assist me in getting a new AC unit at a lower cost (wholesale or better) please contact me immediately! If I can get that much done, maybe I can find a way to get darn thing installed. Many thanks for your assistance from a very grateful heart……..

Getting close to the next Desert Passion Show at Eternal Way - April 5th !!!

And, in case you haven't heard, this one is ALL TRIBAL STYLE (ATS, ITS, Fusion & Gypsy) You will have to come and see for yourself what makes the 4 styles different. We have a great lineup with some of the best Tribal Artists in the State (and it is still under construction, so if you have an urge to show us what you can do - contact me as soon as possible).

The 2-hour show starts at 8:00 PM at The Eternal Way Center, 1122 South Lamar (remember parking is a premium, so come early). We are collecting $10.00 at the door (Kids under 12 free - but please have them bring a pillow and sit on the floor to save our limited chairs). And that's $5.00 for Workshop Participants. There will be refreshments, although probably not enough. Desert Passion is not serving alcohol, but your may BYOB, and there is a refrigerator.

SPEAKING OF WORKSHOPS ! Sahira & Zymirrah of Urban Gypsy will be teaching a workshop that same afternoon from 1:00 - 4:00 PM (also at Eternal Way) and this one sounds very interesting....."Taking the Dance Back to its Roots".....Sahira says it is inspired by the folk dances of Upper Egypt, Urban Gypsy brings you a “brand new” (but really old!) vocabulary of sassy and earthy movement combinations from their time spent with the Gahwazee and folk dancers in Cairo. Hearken back to the days of dancing in the desert with Urban Gypsy. And bring your zills!

From Shira’s Glossary of Bellydance Terms: http://www.shira.net/glossary.htm

“Raks Al Assaya. (Pronounced "rocks all uh SI yuh", with the "SI" syllable rhyming with "pie".) Sometimes spelled Raqs Al Assaya. This is the Arabic term for the cane dance. This dance originated in southern Egypt, in the region known as the Said or Upper Egypt. Traditionally, in the Said, men carried long sticks with them which they used as weapons, and eventually they evolved a dance…in which they feigned fighting with these sticks. Women then began dancing with canes as a way of playfully imitating this men's dance, and eventually Raks Al Assaya developed into a distinct women's dance.”

Hola to everybody!

On Saturday 16th of February from 7 to 10 pm, at Zahirah Noor Studios (14520 Memorial Drive -www.zahirahnoor.com) I will be hosting a fun, entertaining and love-giving fundraiser. There will be dance performances all throught the night, specially featuring Shunyata Bellydance: for the first time in town we will hit the stage and recreate the entire show that got a big load of opas! this past season at the Texas Renaissance Festival! There will be also a drum circle (wanna play? bring your drum!, wanna dance but not on stage? bring a coinscarf and join us!), middle eastern food, drinks (BYOB if you please so, although some wine and sangria -of course!- will be there too), and a big silent auction. Also we will have nice vendors with us...wanna fix a last minute costume for the event? We can provide that too!
The reason for the event is the following: As many of you know, I'm from Spain (and for the rest of you who don't know me...try youtube shunyata...and see what happens!), so it has arrived the time where my temporary visa for being in the states works no more, and I am seing myself in the middle of the process of getting my permanent one, which happens not to be on winter sales! So, if you have ever seen me dancing or attended a class with me and liked what I do...now you have a very good chance to support my art and my stay in this country. Really. Any dollar that anyone can add will help...that's why there will be no cover charge at the door, only love donations. Get down and dirty with some great West African music and moves! This is a high impact aerobic class that is so fun you forget you’re working out! Moves can be adapted for various body types, but this workshop is not recommended for students w/ injuries. Bring a towel, water and a change of clothes. Olivia’s Recommendation >> Don’t eat before class. ......

Liquid Layers - 2 hours - 11:30am
Bring the belly back in belly dance. Build combinations of liquid layers and torso work that roll and ripple through your belly, back, hips and shoulders. Then, add arms and footwork to frame and enhance some of your most elegant moves.
1 hour lunch break

SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Supah’ Saucy ~ 3 hours - 2:30p
Kicks, spins, long extensions & locks are the signature of Zafira’s current repertoire. This workshop presents some fancy footwork & spins in several combinations. Couple these saucy moves with evocative music & emotion, & you are at the core of Zafira’s “steal-your-heart” style of Belly Dance.

SUNDAY ~ LATE MORNING
Cane - MASTER CLASS ~ 3 hours ~ 11am
This workshop goes into history & context of cane, teaches folkloric moves in a short choreography, then puts a very contemporary Zafira Style spin on this folkloric dance.

About Olivia:

Raised the daughter of a Slovak Steel Worker and a German Go-Go dancer deep in the Rust Belt of Western Pennsylvania, Olivia Kissel’s love of bizarre music and dance began at a tender age. Intrigued by the world-renowned Binewski’s Fabulon, Olivia turned her talents to the circus arts early on. At first, she performed wildly exotic Senegalese and Guinean ritual dances. Then she was seduced by the sultry art of Tribal Belly Dance, where she found a band of exotic and passionate dancers who would later become known as Zafira Dance Company. Together they drew standing room only crowds in performance after performance across the nation. Hello Beautiful 3rd Coasters....

By the powers that be- namely Zymirrah- I'm on my way back to Texas to see ya'll!!! I will be in town for the fabulous Olivia weekend (March 7-9) doing and teaching henna. So, if you didn't get enough of me during 3rd Coast Tribal or you missed me all together now's your chance to get your henna fix!!! Friday night I'll be teaching a rocking fun henna class and then Sat and Sun evenings I will be available for private appointments....yee haw, the good times keep coming!!!!

So I need your help. If you are interested in taking the henna class let me know what you want to learn about. I will be tailoring the class to fit the wants, needs and desires of you, so here's your chance to give a shout out as to what you want the class to be about (this does not commit you to taking the class, so even if you're not sure you're taking the henna class, but are just interested, let's here what you have to say!) The class will be hands on so come prepared to do henna (and ANYONE can do it and I really do mean anyone!!! , no experience necessary!)

Here are some class ideas, but feel free to add your own (choose as many as you are interested in):

*beginning henna instruction (how to do henna, very basic designs)
*hands and feet designs
*lower back and stomach designs
*Specific style of henna you'd like to learn about (Indian, North African, Moroccan, Arabic)
*Creating organic henna designs (going with the flow)
*History of henna and designs
*Adapting different images to henna (from books, magazines, tattoos, elaborate henna designs, artwork, etc...)

I look forward to hearing from you and can't wait to see everyone in March!!!!!!!!!!!! (yes, I'm going to use lots and lots and lots of exclamation marks because I am sooooooo excited to be coming back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

It was so awesome to meet all of you, to be inspired by you, and to make such kick ass goddess friends during 3rd Coast. This was my second time in Texas doing henna and I was as impressed this time as my first with how warm and friendly Texans are (and those of you who were there but not from Texas, you rocked too...of course...and I rocked...and she boop a you boop- little tangent, I'm back now!)
